Dancing, Dancing...

In a photo shoot for the NFL rookies, Upper Deck held a TD dance contest with the winner walking (dancing?) away with an autographed Michael Jordan jersey (don't they have a licensing deal with any football greats?).

Check out the video here. (H/T - SI hot clicks)

In other dancing news - Erin Andrews wants to be on Dancing With the Stars. I have never really watched, but this might make me learn the salsa...

S-P-E-L-L T-H-I-S...

Not only is today the Champions League final, it is the start of the National Spelling Bee.

For someone who took French and English all through school this would have been almost impossible for me to win. I would have confused the spelling of "blue" as "bleu" and been out in the first round.

Check out Darren Rovell analysis (yes, there is analysis) of this year's contestants. Whoever can spell the favorite's last name wins!

Tuesday Mind Dump

Apparently I am American and didn't know it because I took the Memorial Day weekend off.

Too much to catch up with over the weekend, but a couple of highlights included Helio Castroneves winning the Indy 500 just about a week after getting cleared of tax evasion charges that could have put him away for 7 years. The Blue Jays continue to lose. The two NBA playoffs series have been unbelievable. It looks like both series could go seven games.

Some updates and stuff to look for in the next couple of days.

1 - NFL practices continue this week. Look out for which players show up, those that don't and if injuries pop-up. Already this week, Tom Brady is going to practice, Anquan Boldin has fired his agent and of course this sideshow Terrell Owens is back in Buffalo after throwing Tony Romo and Offensive Coordinator Jason Garrett under the bus this week via twitter.

2 - The Jays are finishing up a series with the Baltimore Orioles today and tomorrow. They have lost 7 in a row. The hope is that if they can't end the skid Tuesday night, Doc Halladay can put the breaks on it tomorrow afternoon. The pitching is still going strong, it is the hitting that is failing them. We need that Cito and Gene hitting magic any time now. As long as they can leave Baltimore without losing 9 in a row, the weekend series against the new division leaders Boston Red Sox will be huge and the SkyDome should be rocking...

3 - The biggest futbol match of the year is tomorrow - not TFC vs. Columbus, but the Champions League Final from Rome featuring English champion Manchester United and Spanish Liga champion Barcelona. It should be a great game between two wonderful teams. Since I'll be at work during the live telecast, I need to decide - do I PVR the game and ignore all the websites in the afternoon OR do I watch the gamecast so I see the result, but don't actually see the action. Opinions??

4 - More soccer - I know...but the new Philadelphia MLS team announced their colors and logo the other day - check them out here.

5 - For those of you who don't listen to all the Bill Simmons Sports Guy podcast, he had a great idea today - remake Cheers but base it in Chicago. He debated the new characters with his guests but left some of the spots open. Also, the one big idea was that they cast Norm and Cliff as African Americans...who do you think should play the characters
Sam Malone - Vince Vaughn (Simmons idea)
Diane - Estella Warren (BLT idea)
Carla - *need help
Coach - William Peterson (BLT idea)*might not be old enough, but could work
Woody - *need help
Norm - Tyler Perry (BLT idea)
Cliff - Anthony Anderson (BLT idea)

Thirsty Thursday

Great patio weather in Toronto! The spring has finally sprung, the birds are signing and the flowers are in bloom. You know what else blossomed last night? Big Papi! He ended his longest home run draught at 150 at bats (35 games) with a dinger off of Brett Cecil.

What else is happening around us?

1. Eminem album officially released on Tuesday. It has been available on the interweb for almost two full weeks. If you haven't heard it and want to, drop me a message and it might magically appear in your inbox. The album is dark, agressive and frankly quite disturbing. Not really sure how he sat down and wrote some of those lyrics. Some catchy tunes, but nothing classic here.

2. Notre Dame at Yankee Stadium: The rumour started today that Notre Dame is looking at playing a football game at the New Yankee Stadium. The Irish used to play games at Yankee stadium and as cool as this might seem, they have a great tradition in South Bend and why would you take that away from your student body and alumni? Also, this trend of teams playing games that is not their arena has to stop.

3. Jake Peavy to White Sox: Another rumour today is San Diego Padres pitcher being traded to the Chicago White Sox. Peavy, the 2007 Cy Young winner has been the subject of trade rumours for the past couple of seasons. He has expressed his desire to go to the mid-West and the White Sox seem to be the destination. They definately need the pitching help. Peavy still has to approve the trade, since he has a no trade clause, but the good money says he will be on the mound in Chicago by the start of next week.***UPDATE***Peavy rejected the trade, maybe it had something to do with the White Sox getting blown out 20-1 on Thursday night.

4. Lakers vs. Nuggets: GO NUGGETS! George Karl better not blow this one! That is all.

5. Mark Sanchez in GQ: Mrs. MMMMBLT was happy...

Stars and Stripes Hats

Alright, so I ranted on the state of baseball's third jersey a while ago...now the caps will get the treatment.

Alot of people have an affinity for New Era caps. They are the best in the business and everyone wants a "crisp New Era". They do have quality control issues with sizing and width of their letters, but we deal with it because they are the only ones who produce official caps.

In the past decade fashion caps have become all the rage. Take a NY Yankees fitted make it purple, put a green NY symbol and you have a best seller. Pro teams haven't taken this to the field, until July 4th this year. New Era has turned every teams hat RED and made the logo with the stars and stripes (the Jays have a Canadian flag) and teams will be wearing them twice this season - July 4 and September 11. I assume the Jays will get to wear there's a third time on July 1.

For the past couple of seasons we have had the stars and stripes design, except they were in team colours, this is taking the process a little far. New Era has to make certain they don't upset a lot of uniform purest.

Toronto the Good

Via NY Times who give Toronto the "36 hours" treatment.

This would actually be good for any resident of Toronto to do also. Too often we get stuck in the same neighbourhoods, eating at the same restaurants and not taking in the sights that the city really has to offer. Then when out-of-towners (not talking about the 905ers) ask us about we Toronto, we say it is boring and their is nothing to do.

I double dog dare you to experience these 36 hours and not have a good time.

NBA Draft Lottery

The NBA draft lottery happened last night and the Raptors didn't move anywhere. They had a 1.7% chance of getting the first overall pick, the same as the Chicago Bulls last year, but an 81.3% of getting the 9th pick, which exactly where they landed.

There was some movement at the top with the Los Angeles Clippers getting the first overall pick, the Memphis Grizzlies took the second pick and Oklahoma City Thunder got the third pick. Unfortunately, the worst team in the league last season, the Sacramento Kings, who were in line for the first overall pick and Oklahoma Sooners superstar Blake Griffin fell to number four.

So all of Toronto is wondering what the Raptors and the genius General Manager will do at the number nine pick. The current mock drafts and projections have the Raps taking anyone from PG Stephen Curry from Davidson to F Earl Clark from Louisville or PG Tyreke Evans from Memphis. Unfortunately for the Raptors the majority of lottery pick players are point guards/shooting guards and unless BC is going to shake Jose Calderon's confidence and give up on Roko Ukic, none of these players really make alot of sense.

The best move would probably be to trade down or completely out of the first round, save the cap space and pick up a veteran post presence or shooting guard to help off the bench.

Should the Raptors decide to pick at number 9 here are the most likely options;
James Johnson - F - Wake Forest: Part of a talented Wake Forest team that got bounced early from the NCAA tournament, so fans didn't get to see alot of him. Can create his own shot and would play a good energy role of the bench in his rookie season.

Tyreke Evans - SG - Memphis: Championship pedigree, played in a great system at Memphis and is a slasher, scorer with a lot of quickness. Would be a nice addition as he could drive and kick to the outside shooters or dish to CB4 down low.

Gerald Henderson - SG - Duke: Henderson is one of the few Dukies that could be a proficient pro player. Lots of talent, good shooter and a leader on the court. A great compliment player who wouldn't ruffle feathers in the locker room.

Eastern Conference Preview - Orlando Magic vs. Cleveland Cavaliers

Just incase you don't know what is going on in the basketball world, we are down to the final four. The defending champs are out, the MVP hasn't lost a game in the playoffs and the team that everyone thought would win the title was just taken to a game 7.

Here is a breakdown of the conference finals by position;

Eastern Conference - Orlando Magic vs. Cleveland Cavaliers

Center: Two big men in the middle for this series - Dwight Howard of the Magic and Zydrunas Ilgauskas for the Cavs. The advantage is pretty obvious here, Howard gets the nod as he is the defensive player of the year. Howard does have to learn to play like every game matters instead of every other. Advantage - Magic

Forward: Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu for the Magic will square off against LeBron James and Anderson Varejo. The Magic could start two all-stars at forward and you would still give the edge to the Cavs because of their one all-star/mvp/best player in the world, LBJ. Lewis and Turkoglu are both deadly outside shooters and will have to be on their game for the Magic to have a chance to win a game. Neither are great defenders so they will rely on the bench (Mickael Pietrus) to slow down James. Advantage - Cavaliers

Guard: Rafer Alston and Anthony Johnson for the Magic and Delonte West and Mo Williams for the Cavs. Alston has changed his course this year after being traded to the Magic and has played well. Mo Williams knows what he has to do for the Cavs to be successful - don't turn the ball over and pass to LeBron James whenever possible. Anthony Johnson is the veteran leadership that the Magic will need to have a shot, but Courtney Lee the rookie from Western Kentucky is the player who will provide the offense and the energy to swing games. Advantage - Magic

Coaching: Stan Van Gundy for the Magic and Mike Brown for the Cavs. Mike Brown is the coach of the year, but it is more for the job that LeBron did on the league than he did coaching. As for SVG, he has taken alot of flack in the media and his own players for this coaching style, especially in the playoffs. However he did come through with the winning strategy for a game 7 road victory. Advantage - Magic

Overall: The Magic have the advantage in coaching, guard and at center, the problem is they don't have the advantage at forward - where it means the most. LeBron James is a major X factor and that is why the Cavaliers will win in 5 games.

Western Conference Preview - Denver Nuggets vs. LA Lakers

Just incase you don't know what is going on in the basketball world, we are down to the final four. The defending champs are out, the MVP hasn't lost a game in the playoffs and the team that everyone thought would win the title was just taken to a game 7.

Here is a breakdown of the conference finals by position;

Western Conference - Denver Nuggets vs. Los Angeles Lakers

Center: Andrew Bynum of the Lakers against Nene of the Nuggets. Bynum was and is supposed to the be the phenom at center, however between injuries and partying at the Playboy mansion he hasn't lived up to the hype. He went scoreless in 3 of the games vs. Houston. Nene is having one of his best years ever. A force on the inside and with other players that can play center such as Kenyon Martin and Chris Anderson, the Nuggets have lots of good options. Advantage - Nuggets

Forward: Pau Gasol and Trevor Ariza for the Lakers will wage battle against Kenyon Martin and Carmelo Anthony. This will be a great match-up. Kenyon Martin will put the body on Gasol and try to get him off his game, while Ariza will need to play stellar defense so that Carmelo is slowed down from getting his 27 points per game. Lamar Odom for the Lakers and Chris Anderson/Linas Kleiza will be the big factors off very short benches. Advantage - Nuggets

Guard: Derek Fisher and Kobe Bryant for the Lakers and Dhantay Jones and Chauncey Billups for the Nuggets. Without a doubt the best player of the series is in this group - Kobe Bryant. Everyone knows as he goes so do the Lakers. Kobe turns it on when the Lakers need him the most and they will need him if the Lakers look to return to the finals. Billups is Mr. Big Shot, he turned the Nuggets season around when he was traded from the Pistons and has them to the conference finals for the first time since 1985. The X factor in this group is JR Smith. Energy and shooting off the bench. He will be counted on to fill up the basket and run the Lakers off the court. Advantage - Lakers

Coaching: Phil Jackson for the Lakers and George Karl for the Nuggets. Both have been at the game a long time. Jackson has 9 championship rings to show off, Karl wore a jersey while coaching last season. Jackson gives his players inspirational readings, Karl makes certain his players aren't taking drugs. Different personalities, different styles, but both effective with their teams. Advantage - Lakers

Overall: Kobe Bryant is the guy who showed LeBron James what it takes to win at the highest level while they played together on the Olympic team. He also played with Carmelo, the people in Denver hope that Carmelo Anthony learned what it took to be a champion also. It will be a fast paced series, with high scoring games, the Nuggets will give the Lakers a run, but fall short. Lakers in 7.

Snack of the Day

A great long weekend Sunday for sports fans...you have the choice of two NBA game 7's, Rockets vs. Lakers and Magic vs. Celtics. Both should be interesting and a lot closer than expected. The Rockets will give the Lakers a run for their money, but with a new movie to promote, Kobe Bryant will need to perform and carry his team to a Western Conference showdown with the Denver Nuggets. In the East, the Magic have done enough to have already won this series. They have played well, are not intimidated by the defending champions, but lack that killer instinct of a champion and between that and the Celtics playing at home, look for them to advance and face the buzzsaw that is the Cleveland Cavaliers.

If basketball isn't your thing you can watch a meaningless EPL game. Chelsea looks to lock up a place in Europe next season. The game is meaningless because Manchester United clinched the EPL title by gaining a point in a 0-0 draw with Arsenal. It is Uniteds 18th league title, tying them with Liverpool for the most all-time.

Not interested in a futbol match? There is also baseball down at the SkyDome with the Jays vs. White Sox with Roy Halladay pitching for the Jays and it is a bobblehead day. Expect 35 to 40 000 fans at the Dome today.

So all this stuff to do on a Sunday and you are hungry, but it is also a long weekend so you might be travelling, for that you need a snack of the day that can travel with you, something you can bring into the Dome and something that your significant other doesn't have to cook for you. There is one snack that solves all those problems - the pudding cup!

The best part of the pudding cup is that last spoonful, trying to to scrape the sides of the cup of all the last bits of chocolate. Yummy!

NFL recognizes Chad's new surname of 'Ochocinco'

I am actually shocked this went through, it opens up the door for players to bring a little of the XFL to the "No Fun League".

Waiting for the first Brazilian player who wants to put his first name on the back of his jersey.

Brian Tallet and The Awesome Mustache

Brian Tallet has been one of the biggest surprises for the Blue Jays this year. A Blue Jay since 2006 after a trade with Cleveland Indians for Bubbie Buzachero, he has been a key face in the bullpen. Averaging just over 50 innings pitched a season, but keeping his ERA down and hits to a minimum, he cemented himself as someone who would make the club this season, and help the bullpen continue its spectacular performance.

What the Jays didn't expect was injuries to their starting rotation and needing Tallet to fill in as a starter. He has done that exceptionally well. He has now started five games for the Jays, going 2-1, but in the games where he has gotten a no decision he still pitched well and kept the Jays close.

What has led to Tallet's awesomeness this season. Some skeptics think it may be performance enhancing drugs-he is known to work out with Alex Rodriguez in the offseason, but others are noticing another change to Tallet - his mustache.

Brian Tallet isn't the first player to take his career to the next level by adding a mustache to his head. Many have taken this route before, Jason Giambi, Keith Hernandez and most notably Tom Selleck.

When Tallet broke into the majors in 2002, he was a clean shaven 24 year old. After 7 seasons, he is a little older and wiser and knew a mustache was the way to get attention. Cito Gaston took note (also mustachioed) and when Jesse Lietch and Ricky Romero went down with injury, Gaston must have taken one look at his bullpen staff and said "give me the guy with the mustache". The rest as they say his history.

Romero and Lietch are both due back from injury shortly and with the other young starters in the staff also pitching well, Gaston will have to make a choice of who goes back to the bullpen, who goes to Las Vegas (AAA) and who stays in the starting rotation. As long as Tallet keeps his mustache, Gaston should have no problem making this decision and keep Brian and his awesome mustache in the starting rotation.

How To Keep the SkyDome Rockin'!

Tuesday was a great day at the ballpark, even if that stadium was SkyDome and the roof was closed.

The game was a great pitchers duel between the student and teacher - Halladay vs. Burnett. What made it even better, beside the win was the fact that 43 000 fans were in attendance. The atmosphere was great, reminiscent of 1989-93. Lots of cheering, the wave, go Jays go chants and of course heckling of the Yankees superstars.

The concern is Wednesday night. The game tonight was attended by about half as many fans, the energy and the walk up crowd just wasn't the same. So how do the Jays continue to get 40 000+ fans to the SkyDome for games?

Here is a top 10 things the Toronto Blue Jays could do to bring the fans out to SkyDome

1. Every game is a bobblehead game
2. Play against the Red Sox and Yankees 82 times a year
3. Give away more chicken wings during the 5th inning
4. Pitch Roy Halladay on 1 day rest
5. Ensure that the opponent always has a former Blue Jay that is hated
6. $2 tickets
7. Wear the throwback baby blue uniforms for every home game
8. Reduce the cost of concessions ($11 for a draught beer, WTF?)
9. Change the name of the stadium back to SkyDome
10. Bring back Diamond the mascot or add cheerleaders!

How to Heckle....The Yankees

How to Heckle will be a guide for fans attending games at the SkyDome this season, given them ammunition on opposing players to use in a fun, law abiding manor.

The Yankees

Kevin Cash - Middle name is Forrest. Only player on the Yankees roster making less than a million dollars. Former Blue Jay, wasn't able to displace Greg Zaun, Greg Myers, Ken Huckaby, or Tom Wilson for playing time.

Mark Texiera - hobbies include hunting and golf. Ask if he shoots like Dick Cheney and swings like Charles Barkley

Robinson Cano - father played in the majors in the 80's - Jose Cano as a pitcher.

Derek Jeter - Under no circumstances are you allowed to heckle Jeter - if you need a reason google "derek jeter sexual conquests" or visit this nice photo essay.

Alex Rodriguez - Too many to mention, but the most current would be to ask A-Rod to sign a copy of Selena Robert's new book.

Melky Cabrera - Nickname is Leche (milk in spanish). Gets driven to the stadium by Robinson Cano. Favorite movie is Scarface, that is a stretch for a latin player.

Nick Swisher - Ask him if he will follow you on twitter. His handle is @NickSwisher

Johnny Damon - shave those sideburns Johnny!

Hideki Matsui - Ask him about about his porn collection. Did he like the newest release from Vivid? Did Giambi return his tapes before he left town?

AJ Burnett - no explanation needed, the former Jay deserves all the booing he can handle.

Andy Petitte - admitted to using steroids and HGH. Ask him if he still talks to
Brian McNamee. Tell him you are looking for some help making the majors.

CC Sabathia - how many pinstripes are on that jersey exactly?

Triano the Man

It has been announced that Jay Triano will return as Raptors head coach for the 2009-10 season.

This is a good move because the more stable the coaching staff, the better the chance to succeed. Colangelo can mold the team with players that he wants and has the power to get Triano to coach the style of basketball to fit with those players. Not many coaches would bow to this, SMitch didn't and that was probably a big reason he is out.

Here is the official press release;

JAY TRIANO NAMED HEAD COACH

Toronto Raptors President and General Manager Bryan Colangelo announced Monday that Jay Triano has been promoted to head coach and signed to a three-year contract. Triano took over the head coaching duties on an interim basis December 3, 2008 following the dismissal of Sam Mitchell. Per team policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Despite some difficult circumstances this past season, Jay Triano never stopped coaching, teaching and leading this team which resulted in a very strong finish,” said Colangelo. “After undertaking a thorough evaluation process, it is clear that Jay is the right coach to guide this team in the future.”

Triano is the seventh head coach in franchise history. He guided the club to a 9-4 mark in its final 13 outings this past season, including wins over Eastern Conference playoff participants Chicago, Orlando and Philadelphia, and a 12-15 record after the all-star break. He finished 25-40 overall.

Triano served seven seasons (2002-2008) as an assistant on the Raptors’ coaching staff. He became the first Canadian born and Canadian trained coach in the NBA when he was hired in 2002 as an assistant coach to Lenny Wilkens.

A native of Niagara Falls, Triano was the head coach of the Canadian men’s national team from 1998-2004 posting a 52-42 (.553) record. During his stint at the helm of Canada Basketball Triano had the opportunity to coach “Captain Canada” Steve Nash, who was voted the National Basketball Association’s Most Valuable Player in 2005 and 2006. Triano led Canada to a semifinal berth in the 2003 FIBA Americas Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Puerto Rico and to a 5-2 record, second best to the United States, in the 2000 Olympics.

Triano has also served as an assistant coach of the USAB Select Team (2007 and 2008), the head coach of the NIKE Skills Academy in Vancouver (2006) and Toronto (2007), and for the past six years as a coach at the prestigious EURO CAMP in Treviso, Italy.

Triano served as interim head coach for one game during the 2007-08 season when Mitchell was away for a personal family matter. The Raptors defeated the New Jersey Nets, 109-91, on February 13, 2008 at Air Canada Centre.

Coyotes on the Prowl for a New Home

Full disclosure: I am not a hockey fan.

The Phoenix Coyotes seem like they have scored their last goal at the Jobing.com Arena. Last week the Coyotes ownership group filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. They are the first team in the "new economy" do so, but apparently there are more that could follow. This opens the possibility for the NHL to do one of two interesting things to their league.

They could either let the team fold and move on with one less club, have the dispersal draft to assign those players and continue with life. What they will probably do is option B, find an ownership group that is willing to throw away millions of dollars, move the team to a new city, make a successful transition for 3 to 5 years and then appeal to the local government for either a new stadium or funding to bail them out because they haven't made the type of money they thought they would by owning a professional sports team.

Since the NHL isn't about to think outside the box, the question becomes, where does the team move? Here are my top 5 potential locations;

5. Quebec City - Since the loss of the Nordiques, QC has had to depend on heritage festival and "Crashed Ice" competitions. The return of hockey to this hotbed of amateur hockey would be great and just think if they brought back the baby blues.

4. Kitchener/Waterloo - This southwestern Ontario city is a front runner for a team because the guy with the most money wants to buy the team and his offices are in the KW area. The KW area would have some big trouble supporting a pro team. The biggest industry is RIM, but after that it is based on two universities. I don't think that the Delta frat is buying a suite.

3. Cleveland - The former home to the Barons from 1976 to 78, the Cleveland area has made many improvements to its downtown core, building new stadiums, the rock and roll hall of fame and fixing up the waterfront area. A coldweather city without any real competition from other hockey franchises. A great natural rivalry with Pittsburgh, the Cleveland hockey team could work.

2. Winnipeg - The Coyotes were moved from Winnipeg to Phoenix, why not move them back? The reason the Jets didn't work was an old stadium that didn't work in the then blossoming NHL. They needed more corporate assistance, better suites, etc...well with the construction of the new MTS Centre, they got all that. It seats 15 000 fans for hockey and everyone knows that the fan support is there. Bring back the white out!

1. Toronto - The only city that could actually make this franchise successful. The hockey fans in the city (almost everyone) would suck Jim Ballsillie off in the middle of the street if he brought the team to Toronto. There is no reason for it not to work. Major media is all here in the big smoke, the newspapers could divide the teams like they do political parties, fans that haven't seen a winning team since 1967 could jump ship, and dads who don't want their sons to be subject to another 40 years of losing could steer them to cheer for the Coyotes. As for the stadium issue, expanding the Richoh Coliseum is probably out of the question, but either the Hersey Centre in Mississauga or the General Motors Centre in Oshawa would be happy to cooperate with expansion plans.

Where do you think the Coyotes will land? One of the five choices I've provided or somewhere else (Hamilton)?

Happy Mama's Day

Happy Mother's Day to all the mom's out there.

If you have forgotten, shame on you, but there is still time to get her that perfect gift.

Personally, I haven't read this book, it just looks really cool. It breaks down things like First Ladies, Sexually Inadequate Nicknames, Movie Gunfights (and American Guns), Magic Tricks, Dallas Cowboys (and screen cowboys), girl singers and regional soda pop.

If you and your mom like arguing what is the best ever (fill in the blank), than this book is for her.

I know I win the bracket of best son ever, haha...

Freestyle Friday

A couple of items and musings to lead you into the weekend.

1. The Cavaliers look unstoppable. Behind NBA MVP LeBron James (heard of him?) and hussle from their role players, they are blowing out the Atlanta Hawks and will run over either the Magic or the Celtics. Their first test will be in the NBA finals. The best thing to come out of all the Cavs/LeBron-ness is the nice shoes and t-shirts that are popping up.

2. Whatever happened to the no fighting during the playoffs? Both in the NBA and NHL playoffs we have seen multiple scraps. Players are getting ejected, suspended and fined. There was always chippy play - but never have we seen this. Actual hockey fights, Kenyon Martin giving Dirk Nowitzki a forearm shiver, and Derek Fisher running through the screen. It is getting out of control and both leagues need to be careful, because you don't want to cost a team a series because of suspensions (see Suns, Phoenix).

3. A-Rod is back! Just in time as we are one game into the Manny Ramirez suspension, and ESPN needs something to focus on. Rodriguez knows how to manipulate the press and soon enough he will be back on their good side, the fans won't be so forgiving and he will take alot of grief when he goes on the road.

4. Tiger Woods sucks, I could take him at a match play event right now. That is what it seems like everyone thinks. Do people remember before his injury that he didn't win EVERY tournament he entered? For people to question that he isn't the best golfer in the world is silly. So he is "struggling" with his putter. He is still better than 98% of the field. He will win another couple of tournaments this season, and now we know he passed two drug tests, but did Phil?

5. Twitter is blowing up...you can't keep up with the amount of stuff, celebrities, athletes that are part of this social network. Some are more interesting than others, but soon we are going to get all the information directly from the players and coaches. If you are part of twitter-nation - make sure you are following me - @mmmmblt

Jays - Bullpen Aces

In 2008 the Toronto Blue Jays had the number one bullpen in the Major Leagues led by closer BJ Ryan who returned from Tommy John surgery, set-up man Scott Downs, hard working Jason Frasor and youngster Jesse Carlson.

Fast forward to 2009 and the Jays believed the bullpen would once again be spectacular since many of the same faces would be waiting beyond the right field wall in case one of the starters couldn’t go nine innings. Then, injuries struck and shut down BJ Ryan and forced some of the talent to go from the ‘pen to the starting rotation. Brian Tallet and Scott Richmond have already spent time in the starting rotation this season unexpectedly. Although you would think the bullpen would suffer, the Jays have gotten help from Shawn Camp and Brandon League to fill in the gaps and shut down the opposition late in games.

With the best record in the American League, there isn’t much to complain about with regards to the Jays. A bullpen that again is near the top in most of the pitching categories and is leading in strikeouts won’t have many chinks in the armour.

A review of the staff;

Excellent
Scott Downs:
Started the season as the set-up man, but has been thrust into the closer role as BJ Ryan went down with an injury to his trapezius muscles. He was steady coming out of spring training and many people thought he had earned the closer job at that time. Downs has continued to be shut down and is at his most effective when he gets the first batter he faces out. Look for Downs to continue in the closer role in the near future, and manager Cito Gaston will have a big decision to make when Ryan returns.

Jason Frasor: He has been the big winner out of the relievers this season and has benefited from all the run support that the Jays offence is putting up. Frasor has a league leading 4 wins as a reliever. The wins can only come if he is holding the opponents down when he enters the game. No Jay fan is worrying when they see Frasor trot in from the bullpen.

Very Good
Jesse Carlson:
The hard throwing left-hander has come into games in tight situations and has created some of his own. He has managed to work himself out of jams, but it would be nice to see him get some more strikeouts. You cannot complain about only giving up 11 hits in the 15 innings he has pitched,. Carlson has started to give up more hits lately, maybe hitters are starting to learn his unorthodox delivery, but he should have enough juice on his pitches to stay effective for some time.

Brandon League: The workhorse of the Toronto bullpen, League has been the man that Gaston sends out in any situation. He has been consistent in getting the Jays to the 8th or 9th innings. Although, his numbers may not be stellar he will be the glue of the ‘pen for the remainder of the season.

Good:
Shawn Camp:
Another one of the relievers that is getting more than his fair share of work is Camp. To open the season he was the strong arm and able to stop rallies before they started. Recently, he has come back to earth, giving up runs late in games to cost the Jays a couple of wins. With so many young arms and vets returning from injury, Camp may see some more time in Las Vegas (AAA) this season, but he can and will need to be an important part of the bullpen if the Jays want to contend.

Poor
BJ Ryan:
Until his injury six appearances into the season, BJ Ryan wasn’t the same pitcher he was in 2008. It started early in spring training when he pulled himself out of the World Baseball Classic, and then couldn’t get any velocity on his fastball, topping out at 86-87 mph. When the season opened Gaston was using Ryan as the closer, but he was shaky and opposition hitters were getting around on his pitches. Ryan is now in a rehab stint in Florida, working to get back into game shape. When he makes his return, it will be interesting to see how he is used and if he can get the confidence of the fans with the way Downs has been pitching.

To be Determined:
Bill Murphy:
Brian Wolfe
Bryan Bullington

The three pitchers, haven’t worked enough innings to get a rating. All of them will probably be up and down throughout the season, based on injuries and workloads. The most pressure will be on Brian Wolfe, since he pitched with the big club in 2008 and would like to stay up with the big club.

Tyson

Tyson

Last night in Toronto was the Canadian premiere of Tyson, the documentary from filmmaker James Toback (Harvard Man, Pick-Up Artist). The film made its debut last year at the Cannes Film Festival. It showed again to rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival, so the audience was expecting big things during the showing at Hot Docs at the Isabel Bader Theatre on the University of Toronto campus.

The film is billed as a “frank look at the life of Mike Tyson” and that is spot on. Director James Toback who attended the screening last night, put a camera in front of Tyson during a recent stay at a rehabilitation facility and had him speak on boxing, girls, fame, money and life. The camera just rolls, we see 90 minutes of the over 30 hours of footage that Toback shot.

The footage is just Tyson on a couch, speaking on the different topics, or walking by the water’s edge, philosophizing on how he got to where he is now. There are no other people interviewed during the piece to add fluff about how great a fighter Tyson was and how he ruined himself. It is Tyson speaking on how great he was and how he ruined himself. He is very honest with the camera, admitting to cheating on his wife, doing drugs, not training hard for fights, among other things.

You may think that watching Tyson on a couch for 90 minutes wouldn’t be interesting, but the man is insane and admits it. His ramblings on some of his personal activities, how he values money and people and how deadly he could be if unleashed in society scarred some in the audience, but made others laugh out loud.

The documentary does have footage of Tyson in the ring, on display is his power and speed. You forget how young he was (18 years old) when he turned pro. The film they have of him working out and developing while under the watchful eye of his first trainer Cus D’Amato is great to see. They also use some of his press conference footage (Lewis-Tyson Press Conference) and interview footage of old news shows, including a great one with Barbara Walters and Robin Givens where you see a man that has been sideswiped by the media.

Mike Tyson was a simple man. He grew up with a broken home, robbed and beat people up to make cash between the ages of 10 and 13. That was his lifestyle until he found boxing. He took all the rage and anger that society had thrust upon him and used that in the ring. When society decided to give back, with money and adoration he didn’t know how to handle it. It broke him and it led to him going to prison. He tried to recover, but his mind would no longer believe that boxing was right for him.

Now, he has had the chance to look back at his life at the early age of 40, scared himself and has almost righted the ship. Tyson will be a great mentor to young people one day. Showing them that fame and money are not everything it is cracked up to be.

For the boxing and sports fan, this is a no brainer – go see Tyson. For the non-sports fan, you get a glimpse into the life of an extraordinary man who crashed and is trying to build himself up.

Third Uniforms

When do teams finally decide they have enough uniforms? For example the hometown Toronto Blue Jays have four sets of uniforms. The normal home whites, the regular road grey, the third black uniform and then the Flashback Friday baby blue set. The reason for all the uniforms isn't so other teams get confused during a three game series and never know who they are playing, it is the all mighty dollar. There is nothing wrong with adding a third jersey or even a fourth, teams just need to think more about when they wear them.

The third jersey started as "Sunday" wear for most teams, then it crept into Saturday games, then out of nowhere teams began wearing them whenever they pleased. Now we see teams wearing their alternate jerseys twice during a three game series.

The coloured third jerseys like the Indians blue, Oakland green or Astros red are not only ugly, but they don't work well with the grey road pants. Would it be too much trouble for the visiting team clubhouse worker to do laundry twice?

The third fashion jerseys should be relegated to weekend games and only at home. It is the home fans that will purchase the jerseys, so why not show them off to your own fans instead of wearing them on the road.

Now to write my rant on second and third hats, oh you Red Sox...
